| Brilliant Disguise: The many masks of Robert Waldeck, Echo Weekly. Kitchener, Ontario. April 3rd, 2003 | |||
|
"I think masks have the ability to become emblematic devices of our own personal, social, and cultural identities," says Waldeck. "I find myself often wondering, where does the mask end and identity begin? For me both exist in a distorted relationship which disguises both the mask and the person beneath." Within the portrait-style mask series, the furious expressions undulate and dissolve upon visceral surfaces. All untitled, these hideously beautiful works are compelling in their ability to morph between the exterior mask and the face beneath...Waldeck is a rare contemporary painter prompted by decidedly novelistic impulses...this sense of aggressive coarseness in which he paints is radical and subversive (in its own nose-thumbing way)- much like the harsh juxtaposition of the privately erotic with the publicly avaricious undertones of his subject matter. It is this aspect of Waldeck's work that best contributes to the authentic emotional power of his vision." |
